Suffolk Surviving Winter Appeal 2019/20

The UK has the sixth-worst long-term rate of excess winter deaths in Europe with the highest levels of fuel poverty in the UK present in the East of England

Do you receive a Winter Fuel Payment that you don’t need?
Please donate it!

The majority of those affected most severely by the cold weather are vulnerable older people, many of whom are housebound with their suffering hidden from view.

All of these issues can very quickly see a significant drop in an individual’s physical and mental wellbeing and a dramatic rise in their need for support from our National Health Service. A figure which clearly illustrates this is that for every winter death, there are a further 7 hospital admissions.

Suffolk Community Foundation is asking you to donate your Winter Fuel Payment if you don’t need it or simply make a donation to help another older person is Suffolk desperately in need of extra support this winter. Every penny that you give to The Surviving Winter Appeal will quickly be distributed to an older person in Suffolk to heat their home.

For over 14 years, our Foundation has been supporting charities and community groups in Suffolk all year round, to change local lives.

In previous years, the Surviving Winter Appeal has focused purely on supporting older vulnerable people to stay warm in their homes – and this year is no exception. However, with the level of uncertainty in the county affecting so many aspects of life, and the ongoing increase in living costs and food prices, there are now other vulnerable groups in society that are equally at risk when temperatures fall, including children and those suffering poor physical and mental health.

This year, with increasing numbers of people living in deprivation in Suffolk, we’ve also set up a new Winter Crisis Appeal to help people of all ages to stay warm, stay well and stay connected.

As with the Surviving Winter Appeal, every penny donated to this fund will quickly be used to help another vulnerable person in Suffolk in the coming months.

PLEASE GIVE AS MUCH AS YOU CAN AFFORD

“Simple ideas are often the best. If older people don’t need their non-means tested winter payment, they can donate it to others that are more vulnerable – this is just the act of kindness which is needed in these financially challenging times. Older and more vulnerable people are in the weakest position to improve their own circumstances and very much need our help, especially as the nights draw in and temperatures are dropping below zero.”

“I have often heard people say that ‘charity begins at home’ and the Surviving Winter Appeal is a simple way that people across Suffolk can help those in their own communities that are in the greatest need. Please give generously.”
Christine Webber
TV presenter, Journalist, Author and Wellbeing Expert

“Great to see Suffolk stepping up and giving so generously to help the Surviving Winter appeal. This idea works so well because it is so simple. If you receive a Winter Fuel Payment and you don’t need it, please donate it to Surviving Winter and somebody else in Suffolk will have the opportunity to stay warm too. I’m sure this year’s campaign will go from strength to strength. If you can help with a donation we will keep even more older and vulnerable people warm this winter. Thank you.”
