Alumah, West Suffolk, offers a place of safety, in which domestic abuse victims can rediscover their self-worth. Alumah received £5,000 towards their ‘Creative’ support group.
LW initially attended the sessions with a very pessimistic outlook and was unconvinced that the programme would have an effect.
LW had been unable to conceive, and her ex-partner had often used the want for a child as a bargaining tool in his abusive behaviours. There was a massive emotional link, as well as trauma here for LW.
Over time, she gained an insight into the behaviours of an abuser and saw that, what she had gone through with her ex-partner, was indeed abuse. She understood she was not to blame, as she had previously thought.
By the end of the sessions, LW’s confidence had grown and she took the decision to start on the path of pregnancy on her own. She now has a beautiful baby and is happy in herself and her life once again.
She has gained knowledge and understanding about abusers and their behaviours and is now more aware of the red flags to look out for in future relationships.
