Suffolk Community Foundation has awarded nearly £40,000 to charities and voluntary organisations which are helping older people to stay well as the weather turns colder – and is now appealing for further donations so that it can offer even more support.
The first round of funding from this year’s Surviving Winter campaign has seen 16 organisations awarded a total of £38,800 to fund practical projects to help older people keep warm while staying safe, healthy and connected. Initiatives to benefit so far include:
- Ipswich and District Citizens Advice, which is offering advice and support with energy bills.
- REACH Community Projects, which is supplying fuel vouchers and food parcels, as well as offering debt advice and support to apply for benefits.
- Rendlesham Community Centre Charity, which provides warm and safe welcoming spaces, including meals for vulnerable older residents.
- Access Community Trust, which is distributing electric blankets, energy-efficient cooking appliances and supermarket vouchers.
Suffolk Community Foundation is now appealing for further donations from anyone who feels able to support the campaign so that even more people can benefit.
Hannah Bloom, chief executive, said: “We’d like to say a sincere thank you to everyone who has already generously supported this year’s Surviving Winter campaign. We are delighted that the first round of funding has now been awarded to charities and community groups, which are making sure it reaches those most in need.
“However, the fund relies entirely on donations, which is why we are asking the fantastic people of Suffolk for help once more. Although it is currently very mild, there are still several months of winter lying ahead of us, while the dark afternoons can also be incredibly isolating for vulnerable older people. Your donation could make a real difference by providing practical support, such as hot meals or electric blankets, as well as community warm spaces and opportunities to socialise.
“Please do consider making a gift if you feel able and help make sure that older people struggling with fuel poverty and the cost of living receive the support they need when they need it most.”
